GLÅUGUST26: The Classes of Northern Lights v1.1

For GLÅUGUST, "Futility of categorization". The list of the 16 base classes available in my upcoming campaign, with links to the associated post if applicable. The content within is already outdated, surely even moreso in the near future.

Appendix C.a

I'm late to the party as usual, but here's the list of core inspirations for my Northern Lights setting/campaign and its associated GLoGhack, tentatively named Parcel. This list is neither comprehensive nor meaningfully ordered.

Weather and Terrain

An expansion of Tread and my hexcrawl rules, laying out the mechanical effects of terrain and weather.

Blind Mice at the Open Table

Back when I started planning Northern Lights as a GLoG campaign, I wrote up an alternative to Monster XP/Milestones. They've remained basically unchanged since, and they're a close second to Tread as personal Design Highlights go.

Northern Lights v0.3 Release

After much ado, I've organized the basic rules of my gloghack into a single document! It has all the basics for chargen and dungeon-scale gameplay and my next step is to solidify the overworld exploration loop and larger meta-progression mechanics.

Hexmap Exploration Procedures (ft. the Cartographer)

Each turn on the hexmap for Northern Lights takes one 8-hour Shift, 2 in the day and 1 at night, meaning 3 Shifts covering a full 24 hour day. The party can spend a Shift either Resting or Exploring. I'll be saving the Resting rules for my eventual XP/Advancement article, but this is the post that finally puts to paper the Exploration rules, including the single Most Interesting Mechanic I've Ever Designed. Plus, a class at the end for players wanting to contribute to the navigation process.

The Stars and their consequences (the Pyromancer & Necromancer)

Fundamental to the world of Northern Lights is this: the stars see you, they hate you, and they will unmake you. This effects the world's topology, culture, and ecology, but the main focus of this post is what that means for the players.

I'm keeping any further details below the cut, those in the campaign (you know who you are) avoid reading onward.

The Mentor

A little good advice goes a long way.

Embodied Classes

I was planning on making individual posts for each of these, but after writing up The Icon, I realized they work better as one multi-class post instead.

All Embodied classes start with a Second Self, an alternate form they can inhabit. Each class implements it differently (appearance, activation criteria, duration, etc.), but share the following rules:
  • You only have the Second Self of the first Embodied class you take.
  • Abilities from all Embodied classes only apply while you inhabit your Second Self.

GloGtober '23: A Day in the Life

In the early morning, when the sun has only barely reached the grass at its feet, a Tower hums back to life. Once it verifies that all systems are working properly, (or as well as they can after the endless years), the Mayor is born.

Variable Threat and NPC Statblocks

I've already nailed down how PCs take damage in my GloGhack, but I didn't really know how that damage was dealt or how NPC stats even looked until now. Much of this comes Portal's GLoD (and its inspiration, Blades in the Dark), and I'm sure it'll be adjusted after further reflection and playtesting, but I'm happy enough with where it's at to make it into a post.
