An expansion of Tread and my hexcrawl rules, laying out the mechanical effects of terrain and weather.
To briefly review the basics:
• 24 hour days, with 16 hours of daylight and 8 hours of night.
• Hexes are 6 miles wide and take 4 hours to traverse.
• Tread is marked on a hex's border every time the party crosses it, up to 3 times.
• Each Tread marked on a border reduces the time to cross by 1 hour.
• During exploration, each traveler in the party may Scout (get there safely), Navigate (get there quickly), or Forage (get there efficiently). The more travelers on a task, the more dice rolled for that result.
Terrain
Some types of terrain uses these terms:
• Degrade: Remove -1 Tread from all borders
• Min X: begins with X Tread on all borders, and Tread can never be less than X on any border
• Max X: Tread on all borders can't exceed X
• Forest: No effect
• Prairie: Min 1
• Settlement: Min 2
• Swamp: Max 2
• Mountain: Max 1
• River/Riverbed/Railway: 1 Tread along route
• Canyon/Fissure/Lake: Max 2, completely impassable without specialized tools
• Windy Desert: Degrade every 10 nights
• Snow-Covered Mountain: Max 1, Degrade every 10 nights
• Living City: Min 1, Degrade every other night
• Labrynth: Degrade every night unless any connected Labrynth is occupied by a traveler
Weather
Weather is rolled once per day. I'll be use a hex flower in the actual campaign to keep things feeling grounded.
In addition to any other effects, all weather offers a situational +1d on relevant rolls.
• Rain/Snow: no additional effect
• Sunny: no additional effect
• Breezy/Windy: no additional effect
• Heavy Wind/Rain/Snow: mark no new Tread
• Sandstorm: -1d Navigating
• Heavy Fog: -1d Scouting
• Hail/Drought: 1/Day, spend a relevant item or take Scuffed/Sunburned as a Tier 1 Harm (you can also spend items to protect other travelers)
I think that coveres the main weather/terrain the players are likely to encounter, but do lmk in the comments if I missed any obvious ones 😅. I'm hoping to do a playtest sometime soon, I'll post the results once that happens.
